Your Special Enrollment Period

Or choose during Annual Enrollment
October 15 – December 7, 2026
If you do nothing
Original Medicare on January 1, 2027
Medigap guaranteed issue
63 days after your coverage ends

Who gets this Special Enrollment Period

  • Members of a Medicare Advantage plan that is not renewing (the plan is ending).
  • Members who live in a county the plan is dropping from its service area. You're treated the same as a member of a plan that's ending.

When you can choose new coverage

You can pick a new plan during Annual Enrollment (October 15 – December 7, 2026) so it starts January 1, 2027 with no gap. If you miss that, your Special Enrollment Period gives you until February 28, 2027 to choose.

If you don't choose a new plan

You'll be moved to Original Medicare on January 1, 2027. Original Medicare does not include drug coverage, so you'd need to join a separate Part D plan to have your prescriptions covered.

Medigap rights when your plan ends

Losing your Medicare Advantage plan this way gives you the right to buy certain Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies without health questions, for 63 days after your coverage ends.
